“Conversations with the Dead”

In 1967, Danny Lyon  turned his camera toward life in American Prisons.

“Conversations with the Dead” reflects fourteen months he spent looking

and listening inside Texas penitentiaries.

"Ferguson - A prison farm for young men”.

“The Walls - It is said by inmates transferred to The Walls from one of the farms,

that arriving there is like coming to the free world.”

“Ramsey - A prison farm of over 16,000 acres populated by about 1,400 men.

The prison is divided into a newer and older unit. Ramsey One and RamseyTwo.”

“Ellis is the hellhole of the system. It is there that the convicts considered the

most dangerous are imprisoned. Whether this is true of the inmates there, or even

if the aura of this prison is founded on practices no longer in use, it doesn’t matter.

The presence of Ellis is still the same, for the inmates believe in it and the bosses

believe in it. Ellis is a house of damned men. You cannot approach the building

without feeling its power, and once inside, even in the deep recesses of one man’s

steel cell you will find no humor. Had it been possible, all the pictures in this book

would have been made there.” - Danny Lyon “Conversations with the Dead”.
